Tales of derring-do from a bold naval commander accounted a hero by some and a pirate by others — with the present version of his life not shying away from the sordid details of his early history while still lauding his subsequent naval triumphs on behalf of the United States. This early printing opens with a => hand-colored folding frontispiece depicting the captain shooting his lieutenant for attempting to strike his colors.
