The Oregon State Insane Asylum was authorized by the legislature in 1882 and construction began in 1883 in the Kirkbride Plan design. It received its first patients in 1885. Tables statistically give data on the patients: their civil status, place of birth, nation of origin, place of residence, age, and "supposed cause of insanity." Other information included relates to clothing and food stuffs.
Not yet 10 years old, the hospital needs new buildings and laundry machinery, and the plans for building an electric light plant are on hold.
