Goselini, Giuliano; Francesco Melchiori, ed.  Rime del S. Giuliano Goselini. In Venetia: Appresso Francesco Franceschi, 1588. 12mo (14.6 cm, 5.75"). [24], 362, [22] pp.; illus.

Posthumous collection of sonnets and songs. In addition to his writing, Goselini (1525–87) had served as secretary to several Spanish governors of Milan, allowing him to meet numerous influential figures of his time, to many of whom he dedicated specific poems in this volume. First published in 1572 by Paolo Gottardo da Ponte, this in its fifth edition here also contains a dedication to Ferrante Gonzaga by Melchiori, a life of Goselini credited as => the unquestioned source of information on the author's early years for most biographers, and a detailed index.
The Italian text is printed in single columns using mostly italic and some roman type, decorated with three different sizes of foliated initials, and sprinkled with head- and tailpieces showcasing grotesque heads. => The (letterpress) title-page is graced by a copperplate engraving — an unusual occurrence for the 16th century — of Franceschi's printer's device. Dated 1586 and signed "AG, this features a personified Peace "; and a copperplate portrait of Goselini faces the first page of text.
Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

Mortimer, French 16th-Century Books, 216; EDIT16 CNCE 21481. Not in Adams. On Goselini, see: Treccani (online). Contemporary limp vellum, inked title and flourish on spine, inked title on top edge, evidence of ties; evenly dust-soiled with one small ink spot, front pastedown and most of an endpaper removed, a few pencilled or inked notes. Light age-toning and a few leaves with small ink spots, with the occasional paper flaw from manufacture and one témoin; miniscule marginal worming or (barely) chipped edges through perhaps a third of text, with creased corners and marginal waterstaining of varying darkness to title-page and several gatherings of text.  (38901)   Please RESHELVE This.
