Colonna, Francesco.  Poliphili hypnerotomachia, ubi humana omnia non nisi somnium esse ostendit, atque obiter plurima scitu sanequam digna commemorat. London: Methuen & Co. [Printed by William Brendon & Son, Plymouth], 1904. Folio (34.4 cm, 13.5"). [236] ff.; illus.
$1,800.00

Fine facsimile of the spectacular and for more than one reason revered Aldine incunabulum romance of 1499, detailing Poliphilo's descriptive and dreamy search through antiquity for his lover Polia, and including, among other pleasures, the => numerous unattributed, expert Italian woodcuts that made the original work famous. This offering contains no commentary on the significance or history of the text, allowing readers to simply enjoy the work itself, if they dare engage with Colonna's unique Greco-Latinate Italian; and it represents an interesting => antiquarian effort from a press that published academic works starting in 1889, went on to publish children's books including the Winnie the Pooh series, and eventually found itself charged with obscenity for publishing D.H. Lawrence's The Rainbow.
Provenance: Elegantly simple bookplate of L. Hope Centeno and booklabel of Oxford bookseller H.G. Gadney on front pastedown; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

On the original work, see: Perrins, Italian Book-Illustrations and Early Printing, 139. Publisher's quarter linen and blue paper–covered boards, printed paper spine label brittle and starting to chip with spare tucked in at back; binding lightly rubbed and soiled overall with paper lost at bumped corners, streaks and spots of discoloration to covers, glue action to free endpapers, and hinges (inside) starting but large volume nonetheless sound. Uncut and partially unopened, with mild to moderate foxing along the edges and occasionally to text. => A comparatively, approachably affordable way to possess this landmark in printing!  (38869)   Please RESHELVE This.
