The book of the sea; for the instruction of little sailors. New York: Kiggins & Kellogg, 8 John Street, [ca. 1850]. Near miniature (8.2 cm, 3.25"). 8 pp.; illus. $55.00
Near-miniature chapbook in the first series of "Redfield's Toy Books" (as #12). About sailors, life as a sailor, and types of ships (with definition-like descriptions), this tiny overview is illustrated with => five wood engravings, two wood-engraved vignettes, and a wood engraved tail-piece. Kiggins & Kellogg operated at 8 John Street between 1849 and 1856.
One engraving is signed "W[illiam] Barritt," another "W[illiam] Howland," and a third "HH."
Provenance: Faint early ownership inscription pencilled in upper inner portion of title-page: "Helen [Mark?]land," intriguingly demonstrating that not all of the "little sailors" to be instructed were boys.
Publisher's blue pictorial wrappers; stain in top margin of all leaves, else very good. (38767) Please RESHELVE This.
