Children's fables both rhymed and unrhymed, presented with notable wood engravings after designs by a highly influential French caricaturist known for his politically driven and proto-Surrealist work. Better known by his pseudonym, Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard (1803–47) as => J.J. Grandville provided 16 black and white engraved plates for this anthology, including a frontispiece depicting Death as a swaggering skeleton in a feather-tipped hat. His illustrations often featured => nthropomorphic animals with impressively human-like expressions, which he used to represent the bourgeois of Paris prior to the passage of caricature censorship laws in 1835. He continued producing the popular half-animal, half-human characters when he turned to book illustration, as seen in this volume.

Publisher's red bead-textured cloth, spine with gilt lettering and decoration, front board with large central cartouche bearing a gilt urn with flowers and foliage and floral corner decorations in blind; rear board identical without gilt ornament, all edges gilt. Binding a little rubbed with corners lightly bumped, spine darkened, and small darkened areas on front board; interior and endpapers lightly age-toned, with a minor gutter crack and a few unobtrusive spots of foxing to a few plates and pages. A pleasure to read and admire; sturdy with stunning, frequently funny illustrations.  (38442)   Please RESHELVE This.
