Bernard, Auguste; George B. Ives (trans.); & Bruce Rogers. Geofroy Tory: Painter and engraver: First royal printer: Reformer of orthography and typography under François I: An account of his life and works. Boston: The Riverside Press, 1909. Small 4to (28.8 cm, 11.375"). , 332, pp.; illus. $500.00
Printed by the Riverside Press and designed by => Bruce Rogers, this volume celebrates influential 16th-century engraver Geofroy Tory. Typographer and type designer Rogers (1870–1957) worked for the Riverside Press from 1895 to 1911; upon realizing there was no appropriate type for Tory's biography, Rogers was determined to — according to the prospectus — create a font that would "suggest the types used by Tory . . . , harmonize with the decorations, [and] be agreeable to the eye." Thus, he created "Riverside Caslon" specifically for this edition.
Tory (ca. 1480 – ca. 1533) was an editor, author, and engraver whose work greatly influenced French book design; among his contributions was the promotion of the use of accents, apostrophes, and other punctuation marks in printed French. Tory's designs have been => reproduced as initials, headings, and borders for this volume; the title-page, printed in black and red, bears just one of those stunning borders.
This is the second, revised edition of Auguste Bernard's 1865 work on Tory appearing in English for the first time, having been translated from the original French by George B. Ives.
The prospectus is laid in, announcing the edition as being of 350 copies; as per the colophon, this is no. 71 of 370.
