Princess Der Ling (later known as Elisabeth Antoinette White) penned this account of Empress Dowager Cixi, or "Old Buddha," after "preposterous stories which have been told as truth" surfaced about the latter. Der Ling served as Cixi's lady-in-waiting and, as the author noted, "her confidante on many occasions." Arthur J. Burks provided the introduction.
Fifteen black and white plates from photographs illustrate Der Ling's biography, along with a frontispiece of the Empress Dowager.
