Der Ling, Princess.  Old Buddha. New York: Dodd, Mead, & Co., 1929. 8vo (22.4 cm, 8.875"). xviii, [2], 347 pp.; 16 plts.
$20.00

Princess Der Ling (later known as Elisabeth Antoinette White) penned this account of Empress Dowager Cixi, or "Old Buddha," after "preposterous stories which have been told as truth" surfaced about the latter. Der Ling served as Cixi's lady-in-waiting and, as the author noted, "her confidante on many occasions." Arthur J. Burks provided the introduction.
Fifteen black and white plates from photographs illustrate Der Ling's biography, along with a frontispiece of the Empress Dowager.
Provenance: On front free endpaper, signature of Elizabeth Linscott dated March 1954. Most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

Publisher's orange cloth with black lettering to spine, black lettering and border and red device to front board, top edge stained orange; extremities rubbed, light scrape to rear board. Very small tear to top corner of half-title. => A very good and tidy copy.  (38070)   Please RESHELVE This.
