[Distaff Side]. A children's sampler: selections from famous children's books. [New York]: The Ladies of the Distaff Side, 1950. 4to (25.4 cm; 10"). Unpaginated, [approximately 180] pages. $75.00
One of 375 copies. From the introduction: "The Distaff Side is a loosely-knit organization which comes to life in times of need, usually to raise money or spread cheer as the occasion may demand . . . It is a group of women; and its membership has been enlisted from printing-offices, publishing houses, studios and other hiding-places where may be found devotees of the graphic arts."
This sampler of Distaff Side printing offers 14 children's stories, fables, sketches, myths, and an alphabet, etc., with authors ranging from Aesop to Twain to Gudron Thorne-Thomson; illustrators including Valenti Angelo, Fritz Eichenberg, Jeanyee Wong, and Barbara Latham, with book illustrations also reproduced from earlier centuries; and printers present including Jane Grabhorn and Lillian Marks. => The "samples" are all offered on different types and colors of paper with, as the above attests, widely varying styles of text and illustrations. The beneficiary of the project's profits was to be a children's heart fund.
Binding: Yellow cloth with red-stamped title to spine and front board; red-stamped cover decoration of two children reading with foliage growing around them, signed "Suba" in the corner.
Bound as above, spine faded to cream and boards lightly soiled; slipcase (only) rubbed, wrinkled, and bunged at one corner with the seams cracked. Interior clean and fresh, printing and illustrations wonderful. => A lovely copy of this limited edition. (37739) Please RESHELVE This.
