Nicely decorated binding, plus nine photogravure plates (including frontispiece) by Harry Fenn and J.C. Earl. James Lane Allen's depiction of Kentucky's people and culture won him the title of "Kentucky's first important novelist," and in this historical romance novel — wherein belief in Biblical inerrancy and evolution are central issues — he argues for the economic importance of Kentucky's hemp fields.
        This is a copy of the first edition, first printing, second state as per BAL.
        Binding: Publisher's red cloth, front board and spine with decorations within green-stamped borders of a flourishing green and white–stamped hemp plant; gilt lettering. Top edge gilt; fore-edge and bottom rough cut. According to Minsky, this is => likely the first appearance of cannabis on an American cover.
        Provenance: Signature of C.P. Northrop on front free endpaper; there and on title-page, a small pressure-stamp reading, "The Blasberg Collection."
